Thought For The Week – Ryan Malyk
Published in the Dewsbury Reporter – 5 February 2010
It would normally be my wonderful wife Rachel who would be sharing her thoughts with you this week, but due to her new role as a mother of two, it appears as though her time is not as plentiful as it once was. I have the pleasure of stepping in and helping her out, which brings me on to my ‘thought for the week’.
I was thinking about how to better serve the people of Dewsbury and surrounding districts (after all, Jesus came to serve, not to be served) and was looking at the work we have done as a church over the past 10 years. We have done some really great projects and couldn’t help but dream about how we could do so much more today.
With the terrible scenes seen in Haiti these last weeks, I realised how as people we find ourselves in really desperate situations sometimes. At these moments we really need help, but often it isn’t easily accessible. I know that there are people in Kirklees struggling for a places to stay, food to feed themselves and their family, clothes to keep them warm or even just desperate and can’t see a way to continue.
I want to throw these people a lifeline, just like the nations of the world are doing for the Haitian people. To be there for families, in their moment of greatest need. If we could all ‘love our neighbours as ourselves’, I’m sure our community would look very different. Your one act of kindness could change the life of a whole family forever. Now there’s a thought.
