Cell Groups

Community with Vision

At New Horizons we believe that every person is designed to grow and fulfil their God given potential and purpose, and that this is best accomplished in a small group family where authentic relationships and discipleship can be developed. These small groups are called ‘cell groups’ and form the backbone of our life and community at New Horizons Church.

Cell groups can best be described as a community of friends and disciples with a vision. Through small groups we aim to reach out to our city, connect new people into the life of the church, build loving and accountable relationships, pastor and disciple each person and reproduce leaders able to impact their world with the gospel.

Our Cells

Our cell groups consist of around 4 to 20 people who meet weekly in homes, on campus, in coffee shops, or in the workplace. Each cell meeting has an informal and relaxed feel and usually consists of :

  • coffee and connect time,
  • testimonies,
  • practical teaching and discussion from the Bible,
  • and prayer for the real life challenges and needs of each person as well as for people in the community.

Why Cell Groups?

When Jesus walked the earth he gathered together a small group of 12 men in order to train and equip them to fulfill his purposes in the context of community. In doing so he set the model and example for a fruitful and fulfilling Christian life.

Following Jesus’ death and resurrection, the Bible describes the dynamic life, vision and community that the early church experienced together following the outpouring of the Holy Spirit on the Day of Pentecost.

  • They devoted themselves to the apostles teaching,
  • to the breaking of bread,
  • fellowship and to prayer….
  • and daily people were added to the church’

(Acts 2:42, 47)

The early disciples met together in the temple courts for larger gatherings, and also from house to house for smaller more informal gatherings of people. These small groups of disciples devoted themselves to the lifestyle and vision Jesus had given them (see Matthew 28:18-20; Matthew 22:34; Acts 1:8), loving God, loving their neighbours and reaching out to disciple the lost multitudes all around them. Through their house to house ‘cell’ meetings, thousands of hurting and empty people were transformed, healed and drawn into the magnetic life and community of the early church.
